President Donald Trump vowed Wednesday to “never” repeal the Second Amendment after former Supreme Court Justice John Paul Stevens advocated for repeal in a recent New York Times op-ed.

“No way,” Trump wrote on Twitter. “We need more Republicans in 2018 and must ALWAYS hold the Supreme Court.”

Stevens, who retired from the Supreme court in 2010, advocated for repeal his op-ed, saying such action “would eliminate the only legal rule that protects sellers of firearms in the United States — unlike every other market in the world.”

“It would make our schoolchildren safer than they have been since 2008 and honor the memories of the many, indeed far too many, victims of recent gun violence.”

Stevens’ comments followed a gathering in Washington, DC led by students advocating for gun control who survived the February school shooting in Parkland Florida. The gathering largely featured attendees who advocated full repeal of the Second Amendment.
