The driver of the grey Dodge Challenger who killed a woman and injured 19 people when he plowed through a large group of people on a pedestrian mall in Charlottesville, Virginia on Saturday is James Alex Fields, according to The Washington Post.

A superintendent of the Albemarle-Charlottesville Regional Jail, Martin Kumer, told the Post that local police had arrested and booked a man named James Alex Fields on Saturday afternoon.

The arrest is on several charges including suspicion of second-degree murder and malicious wounding. Other possible charges include failure to stop for an accident involving a death and hit and run.

Fields, 20, is reportedly being held with no bail.

Fields is a resident of Ohio. His last known residence is in Maumee, Ohio, a town southwest of Toledo with a population of 14,286.

Public records obtained by The Cleveland Plain Dealer show that Fields is a registered Republican.

The incident involving the Dodge Challenger occurred in the early afternoon during clashes between white supremacists, Black Lives Matter, Antifa and other groups.

The woman who was killed in the incident was 32 years old.

Five of the 19 injured people remain in critical condition.

Numerous eye witnesses told The Daily Caller News Foundation that the vehicle was driven by a member of the white supremacist movement.

Charlottesville Mayor Mike Singer has urged protesters and counter-protesters to leave.

Hours before the crash, Governor Terry McAuliffe declared a state of emergency around 11:40 a.m., disrupting the main part of the event which was slated to fully kick off at noon. A state of emergency means police are able to disband any and all assemblies at will, regardless of permits obtained in advance.
