FBI Deputy Director Dan Bongino announced Wednesday he will leave the bureau in January, revealing his plans in a post on X.

His announcement came hours after President Donald Trump told reporters Bongino was likely to step down and “go back to his show,” comments Reuters reported as the first public signal the lawman-turned-podcaster was on his way out.

“I will be leaving my position with the FBI in January,” Bongino wrote. “I want to thank President Trump, AG Bondi, and Director Patel for the opportunity to serve with purpose.”

Bongino, a former NYPD officer and U.S. Secret Service agent who rose to prominence as a conservative media host, was selected by FBI Director Kash Patel in February to serve as deputy director under Trump.

The FBI and Bongino have not yet released further details on the timing of his departure or his replacement.

Editor’s note: This is a developing story and will be updated accordingly.
