8-Year-Old Idaho Girl Killed by Illegal Alien Who Had Been Ordered Deported in 2016

I Bleed Red, White, and Blue

On November 12, 2025, 8-year-old Mora Gerety, a student at Washington Elementary School in Boise, Idaho, was fatally struck by a pickup truck while crossing the street at the intersection of North Harrison Boulevard and West Ada Street in the city’s North End neighborhood. The incident occurred around 4:42 p.m. local time as Gerety was reportedly walking home from school. She was rushed to St. Luke’s Boise Medical Center but succumbed to her injuries in the operating room shortly after arrival. The Ada County Coroner’s Office ruled her death accidental, caused by blunt force trauma.

The driver, identified as 42-year-old Elvin Ramos-Caballero, a Honduran national, remained at the scene and cooperated with investigators. A routine records check through the National Crime Information Center (NCIC) revealed an outstanding federal warrant issued by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) for failure to appear at a 2016 immigration hearing, where he had been ordered deported. Ramos-Caballero had entered the U.S. illegally and evaded deportation for nearly a decade. No additional details on his prior entry date or the nature of any other warrants have been publicly released.

Following the crash, Boise Police contacted ICE, which took him into custody and lodged a detainer to prevent his release pending deportation proceedings. As of November 18, 2025, he is being held at Elmore County Jail. The investigation remains ongoing, with no vehicular homicide charges filed yet, though police have not ruled them out. Toxicology results and further evidence are pending.

The Boise community has rallied in support of Gerety’s family, holding multiple vigils. On November 16, a candlelight procession walked from the crash site to Elm Grove Park, where attendees—many children in sports jerseys honoring Gerety’s love of basketball, soccer, skiing, and biking, left chalk messages, flowers, and photos at a growing memorial tree near the intersection. Boise School District Superintendent Scott M. Johnson issued a statement emphasizing road safety for students: “In moments like this, we are reminded of the vulnerability of the young people we serve and of the shared responsibility we all hold in keeping students safe.

“The case has reignited national debates on immigration enforcement, with conservative outlets and figures blaming lax policies for allowing Ramos-Caballero to remain in the U.S. Boise Mayor Lauren McLean, whose city has faced scrutiny for its stance on sanctuary policies, responded to prior DHS warnings by noting limited local jurisdiction over federal immigration matters. Similar high-profile incidents in Idaho and elsewhere, such as the 2018 murder of Mollie Tibbetts in Iowa or the 2024 killing of Jocelyn Nungaray in Texas have fueled calls for stricter border security and deportation priorities. On X (formerly Twitter), discussions peaked in the days following the crash, with users sharing photos of the memorial and linking the tragedy to broader policy critiques.

Gerety’s family has requested privacy as they grieve, describing her as a vibrant, team-oriented child. Local authorities urge drivers to exercise caution in school zones amid the ongoing investigation.
