There is actually a lot of history surrounding the Aunt Jemima brand. The original face of Aunt Jemima was Nancy Green. Born on March 4, 1834, Nancy was a storyteller, cook, activist, and the first model hired to promote the corporate trademark as “Aunt Jemima”.
During the World’s Fair in 1893, the Colombian Exposition in Chicago, Nancy Green’s demonstration on how to use the new pancake mix was extremely popular. So popular in fact, that police were forced to control the crowds who watched her make the mix at the Aunt Jemima booth. Fair officials awarded Nancy Green a medal, proclaiming her the ‘Pancake Queen’.
Green’s role as Aunt Jemima gave her the financial freedom to become an activist and engage in antipoverty programs. She was also one of the first African-American missionary workers, and used her fame to become a leading advocate against poverty and equal rights for individuals in Chicago.
The cancel culture has erased a tremendous story of a black woman born into slavery, who against all adversary, went on to gain financial freedom and live the American Dream.
Dismissing her as a caricature and racist symbol is ignorant, and a historical injustice.
Nancy Green’s ‘Aunt Jemima’ is a part of American history.
