A now deceased lone gunman shot two civilians and five sheriff’s deputies, one fatally, Sunday morning as they were responding to a domestic disturbance call in a residential neighborhood outside Denver, Colo, local authorities say.

The shooting occurred around 5 a.m. local time outside an apartment complex in Douglas county and, after a prolonged search, authorities say the attacker is now “believed to be dead.”

“We have multiple officers down,” Douglas County Sheriff Deputy Jason Blanchard initially told the Denver Post. “We are not giving numbers or status at this point, we are still working on getting the suspect in custody.”

The Douglas County Sheriff’s Office instructed citizens of Highland Ranch, where the incident occurred around 6 a.m. local time, to shelter in place as the gunman is still at large. They have now established an emergency shelter for those displaced by the police search.

A spokesperson for the Sky Ridge Medical Center told NBC News they were treating three people involved in the shooting, all of whom were in non-critical condition.
