Oakland Mayor Writes Op-Ed Criticizing Trump On Immigration — Doesn’t Mention MS-13

The mayor of Oakland, California wrote an opinion piece for The Washington Post this weekend criticizing President Trump’s stance on immigration and sanctuary cities.

Libby Schaaf, the mayor, says she backs her constituents, regardless of the legality of their entrance into the United States, and that she is fighting for the illegal immigrants in her district. According to her, the city of Oakland isn’t “[obstructing] justice” but in fact are “[seeking] it.”

Schaaf cited the example of Maria Mendoza-Sanchez and her husband. The two of them moved to America illegally over two decades ago, but they were deported last year. They spoke English and had degrees, but they were still in the country illegally.

The mayor also pushed the narrative that the president called immigrants “animals,” although many other news outlets had to issued retractions after it was made clear Trump was only referring to MS-13 gang members.

Schaaf added that “sanctuary cities such as Oakland are seeing dramatic decreases in crime.”

President Trump’s Comments:

She said, “Under the Trump administration, undocumented residents are vilified as ‘dangerous criminals’ or, as of last week — simply ‘animals.’ Trump has more than doubled deportations of people without any criminal convictions.”

Last month, the president urged Jeff Sessions to prosecute Schaaf for warning her constituents of an impending U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement raid targeting undocumented immigrants. The raid, according to Politico, targeted over 1,100 people, but only approximately 200 were arrested.
