Gowdy Rules Out Potential Rosenstein Impeachment

Rep. Trey Gowdy put a damper on any potential plans to impeach Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein, stating on Sunday that there isn’t enough House support to pass such a measure.

“No. For what? Impeach him for what?” Gowdy told Margaret Brennan on CBS’s “Face the Nation.” “No.”

“I’m not convinced there is a movement,” Gowdy said, referring to a report from Politico that Reps. Mark Meadows, Jim Jordan, and others are preparing impeachment documents to oust the deputy attorney general. (RELATED: Report: House Conservatives Lay Groundwork For Rosenstein Impeachment)

Rosenstein has been the focus of intense criticism by Republicans frustrated by his handling of both the Russia investigation and his reluctance to turn over information related to FBI agent bias against President Trump, and Gowdy has also been a critic.

“I’ve had my differences with Rod Rosenstein,” the South Carolina congressman said. “I talk to him quite often privately, which again is a lot more constructive than the public hearings we have.”

Gowdy said if President Trump is unhappy with Rosenstein’s performance, “he can fire him with a tweet” since he is a Trump appointee.

While Rosenstein announced the indictment of 12 Russian nationals on Friday, he also said no election results were affected by their actions.

“There is no allegation in this indictment that any American citizen committed a crime. There is no allegation that the conspiracy changed the vote count or affected any election result,” Rosenstein said Friday.
