FBI Remains Silent Over A Week After Baltimore Calls For Cop-Killer Investigation

The FBI has yet to respond to the Baltimore Police Department’s now 10-day-old call for a federal investigation into the November slaying of Detective Sean Suiter.

Baltimore Police Commissioner Kevin Davis called for the investigation in a Dec. 1 letter, and the FBI has so far not responded, despite acknowledging that it had received the request that day. According to former agent Dr. Tyrone Bowers, the hold up may be due to the bureau’s vetting process as they need to ensure there are no conflicts of interest before taking the case, CBS Baltimore reported Tuesday.

“You don’t know if you take lead on this investigation who you’re going to have to interview. Some of the people you may very well need to interview may be people that in some form or fashion you are investigating,” Powers told CBS. “I think they are working with all deliberate speed. I think they are working as quickly as they can considering the circumstances and considering all the other things that are going on presently in Baltimore City.”

Davis’ Dec. 1 letter claimed the case had become “significantly complicated” by the fact that Suiter was murdered just one day before he was scheduled to testify against other police officers in a federal corruption case. Davis said the FBI was better equipped to take up the case because his detectives were not privy to information regarding that federal investigation.

“I am growing increasingly uncomfortable that my homicide detectives do not know all of the facts known to the FBI or USAO that could, if revealed to us, assist in furthering this murder investigation,” Davis wrote.

Suiter was a 15-year veteran of the police force and was married with five children. He is the 137th Baltimore officer to be killed in the line of duty.
